Intelligent Street Lighting

 

The Idea:

The basic Idea behind this invention is to minimize the energy needs of public lighting while preserving full traffic safety.

Energy saving effects are achieved by realtime analysis of lighting needs, up tp 60% of energy are saved compared to the consumption of contemporary illuminants (LED) without controller.

Operation:

Traffic in the region of each street light is being analysed by integrated sensors, relevant informations are transferred to a controller via the internet.

The brightness of each street light is adjusted to the traffic needs in its direct neighborhood.

The power consumption of each street light that is not needed at a certain point in time is reduced to a minimal value still allowing the system to correctly analyze the traffic in its coverage reliably. This value is at about 10% of the nominal power of the illuminants.

A controller determines the brightness of each assigned street light following these criteria:

 

  • Network topology (Street map)
  • Relevant data of daylight and weather
  • Traffic situation

B) Controller:

The controller is used to collect, process and transmit information relevant to the operation of the system and is located at a freely selectable site.

It receives the status information of its assigned street lamps via the internet and processes the collected informations as defined by traffic safety rules and optimization of energy consumption.

The controller detects operational safety problems and generates the relevant error messages which are then communicated via public networks.
